Photoshop Elements 9 Rocks

I just picked up the latest version of Photoshop Elements (9) and was truly amazed at how much they have packed into this $66 (eBay) program. It truly rivals the full version of Photoshop ($690) from just a couple of years ago.

It is missing a few of the "bells and whistles" that are in the full version but

is totally adequate for the beginner to advance amateur photographer and even for the aspiring professional.

Winter Photography Tip #3

Batteries do not work as well when cold. When on an extended photo treks in the cold, carry extra batteries, in a plastic bag, inside your coat.

Winter Photography Tip 2

Enjoy photographing the beautiful winter scenes but do not ruin your camera in the process.
When coming in from the cold, your camera will often fog up from the warmer, more humid air inside. This can cause damage outside and inside your camera.
1. Never wipe off your lens with a paper towel. Always use a lens tissue or you may permanently scratch your lens.
2. To prevent the condensation, place your camera in a sealable plastic bag, while still outside, and then allow your camera to warm up inside, while inside the bag.

Winter Photography Tip 1

When photographing the snow, does it come out gray for you?
The reason is that your internal meter will automatically expose to make the subject gray.
It will make a black cat gray or white snow gray unless you do something to compensate.
Most modern cameras have exposure compensation.
If snow is the predominant subject in your image, set your exposure compensation to +0.5 to +2.0 depending on how bright it is.
Check you camera manual for how to do this for your camera.

Two other, more accurate, methods to achieve a correct exposure is to:
1. Bring a gray card and expose for that with your camera meter
2. Use an incident light meter to measure the light striking your subject.

Beach Photography Tip

The summer beach season is upon us.

Did you ever wonder why your pictures at the beach come out dark?

No details in the shadows?

Faces too dark?

The reason is that your automatic meter overcompensates for the bright sand and underexposes the image. Most automatic cameras have an exposure override function. Simply going to +1/2 to +1 may give you images with details in the shadows.

I had a very productive time , in Nashville, for the Imaging USA Convention of the Professional Photographers of America. I got to see many old friends, in the field, and make some new ones of the "up and coming" stars. Professional photography is going through an evolution and it was very educational to see the new trends and opportunities. Once again I volunteered on the Convention Committee and was honored with a "Meritorious Service Award".

You do not want condensation on your sensor.
I would not change lenses outside, to reduce the possibility of condensation on the sensor.
If this happens
DO NOT WIPE IT OFF!!!!!!!!
Bring it inside to evaporate the moisture. It may require having it professionally cleaned.

Boston Strides a Success

I had the honor to be the official photographer, for the third year in a row, at the Boston Strides, Breast Cancer event at the Esplanade in Boston today.

40,000 walkers participated to support the American Cancer Society's fund raiser to fight Breast Cancer. Over 3.2 million dollars was raised, making this the largest, and oldest running Breast Cancer event.

Dover Apple Harvest Day Festival a Success despite the Weather

A "little" rain could not drive away the crowds at the Apple Harvest Day Festival held in Dover NH today. Although not as crowded as past years with sunny weather, many visitors came to see, and enjoy, the festivities ranging from Arts and crafts, Music and Dance, Rides, Food, Vendors and non-profit organizations. The event showed the true spirit of New Englanders, where a little moisture couldn't dampen spirits.

I was "working" but had a fantastic time celebration the New Year at the Portsmouth Gas Light Company, at their "White Party". Everyone wore white and part of the proceeds went to a local charity hEAT, which provides heating fuel to local needy families.

We had a fantastic afternoon enjoying Brahms as our daughter, Sarah, played first Violin with the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra at the Music Hall in Portsmouth. Sarah is a 17 year old and is the second youngest member of the orchestra.

Mat Randall's Black Belt Academy November Promotion

Forty students at Matt Randall's Black Belt Academy received their next belt in their progress toward earning their Black Belt in Tai Kwan Do. Matt Randal is celebrating his 21st year teaching Martial Arts and leadership, in Dover NH.

One thing I really enjoy photographing are newborns. We do, what we call "parts is parts" sessions where we capture the newborn's detaitl of hands, feet, ears, nose, mouth etc. They grow change so fast!. We don't want to miss this time of their life.
